Holidaymakers burglary misery
Nearly one in ten homeowners return from holidays or day trips to find they have been burgled, an insurer says.
Research released by Churchill Home Insurance shows nine per cent of homes have been burgled while the occupants were away on excursions.
The average total value of the items taken is usually around £3,288 per incident, the firm added.
Churchill Insurance spokesman Claire Foster said: "While insurance cannot prevent burglary, it can provide reassurance that the monetary value of anything stolen is covered."
The most common things taken are small items like DVDs, CDs or videos, which are the most popular with theives.
Jewellery is the second most popular item for theft, with money including cheque books and credit cars third.
Kitchen apparatus also made it onto the list, aming up nine per cent of things stolen during raids.
Home Office statistics show the overall UK burglary rate is currently on the slide, with domestic burglaries down 59 per cent on 1995 figures.
